All HKS exhausts developed and sold for the Japanese market do not require the use of an Inner Silencer(s) to pass Japanese safety standards.

Note: HKS exhausts developed and sold for markets outside of Japan may not pass Japanese safety standards, and/or safety standards of countries outside of Japan. It is the responsibility of each end user to comply with local regulations.

The Japanese safety standard testing procedure for measuring close noise emitted from an exhaust is performed as per outlined in the following steps:
1. The sound measuring device is positioned 0.5 meters from the exit of the exhaust, at an angle of 45 degrees.
2. The engine RPM is held at the point in which the engine is producing 75% of the maximum output.
3. The test is conducted by holding the throttle open for 5 seconds at the designated RPM in step 2, then releasing the throttle, the sound level is measured during the full duration of this process and ends when the RPM has naturally returned to idle.

The sound measuring device is positioned 0.5 meters from the exit of the exhaust, at an angle of 45 degrees.

Using the Lancer Evolution as an example, as the maximum power output has been measured to occur at 6,500 RPM, the test is conducted at 4,875 RPM.

The throttle is held to maintain a constant RPM of 4,875 for 5 seconds, then released. The sound emitted is measured until the engine RPM has returned to idle.

HKS provides a warranty to the original purchaser of HKS exhaust systems against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year. The warranty applies only for vehicle specific exhaust systems. Other products such as metal catalyzers, front pipes, exhaust manifolds, and center pipes are not covered.

HKS constructs each exhaust system with the highest quality materials possible, including the sound absorption material used. The sound absorption material is a specific glass wool developed by Owens Corning called Advantex which is manufactured in one continuous strand to be as effective and durable as possible. However, due to the nature and purpose of an exhaust system, it must be considered as a consumable item and as such the volume may increase and the tone may become lower in frequency over time.

HKS designs each exhaust system to minimize uncomfortable and/or unpleasant noises, especially under mild load, cruising conditions – commonly referred to as “drone”. This feature, called the “ SILENT CHAMBER (ex: ES WAGON 409)” is utilized on HKS exhaust systems developed for applications and layouts that are especially prone to exhaust drone. By tuning the resonance within the exhaust system, these low frequency unpleasant sounds are able to be cancelled out without negatively affecting the flow and efficiency of the exhaust system. Furthermore, by placing the Silent Chamber in an area of the exhaust system that is not plainly visible, HKS is able to offer an exhaust system that is not only tuned for optimum performance and sound, but also for ideal aesthetic appeal.

The HKS SUPER TURBO MUFFLER line of exhaust systems have been designed for the enthusiast who has a tuned turbocharged vehicle who is looking to decrease exhaust pressure to support other modifications such as an upgraded turbine, but does not want to sacrifice drivability due to increased exhaust volume. The HKS Super Turbo Muffler has been developed to keep exterior exhaust noise to a minimum to reduce attracting unwanted attention, and also to retain a comfortable level of interior noise – without drone, at cruising speeds.

The HI-POWER SPEC R line of exhaust systems are ideal for vehicles that have been purpose built for track only race use or in any situation where ultimate performance is prioritized over all other factors. The HKS 2 Stage Exhaust System for the R34 Skyline GTR and the HKS 3SX (3 Stage Exhaust) for the R35 GTR are valve controlled exhaust systems that allow vehicles with extreme power output to retain drivability without compromising power output. HKS has recognized the demand for such a system by developing an exhaust with sufficient flow characteristics to support extreme power levels while restricting both exhaust flow and emitted noise volume when it is not required by the engine. The electronically controlled valves in these exhaust systems are automatically opened and closed by the electronic control unit at predetermined RPMs to keep exhaust volume at a minimum under mild load cruising conditions, and allowing for minimal exhaust pressure at higher RPMs. The HKS 3SX exhaust system can also be controlled manually through the control unit.

While it is a fact that multi tube dampers will have more available stroke distance than a single tube damper of the same exterior dimensions, this difference in stroke distance does not dictate the potential of suspension performance or ride quality. The additional stroke distance of multi tube dampers is a product of the oil chambers and gas chambers being combined and therefore allowing the oil and gas to mix with each other. Single tube dampers have separate oil and gas chambers, which do not mix, which allows the damping control to be more consistent, more responsive, and extend the life of the oil, even in prolonged demanding conditions.
 

If comparing two dampers of identical exterior dimensions, made of identical materials, single tube dampers are generally structurally weaker than multi tube dampers, due to the absence of the additional internal structure. However, as HKS has complete control of both the design and manufacturing of all HKS coilover kits, materials are carefully specified and tested for each component of each application - which are then manufactured with extreme precision. In realistic real world situations, an incident of failure would be virtually impossible.

Furthermore, to decrease the possibility of suspension failure and loss of control even in the case of a side impact due to being involved in an accident, coilover applications for vehicles with strut type suspension configurations are inverted. Inverted type dampers have a greater structural strength than normal type dampers especially to side load and side impact, for this reason inverted dampers are chosen for strut type applications as the strut itself is a structural suspension component.
 

Within the damper, the piston valve is a moving part that is attached to the end of the piston rod which seals against the cylinder which is the damper case. The piston valve travels from one end of the damper to the other and in increments of distance thereof, in exact relation to the distance that the suspension is compressed and extended. The piston valve controls the movement of the suspension by regulating the rate at which oil can pass through it from one side to the other through a hole or a series of holes that are called orifices. As a vehicle is being driven, the suspension is constantly in motion, compressing and extending to absorb irregularities in the road surface and as weight of the vehicle is shifted as it changes direction, accelerates or decelerates. The specific amount of resistance to this movement is controlled by specifying the rate of flow, pressure at which the rate of flow changes, and the duration of change. The valving properties of each HKS coilover kit is developed specifically for each application, and for the intended use of the application.

When developing a coilover kit, there are many physical factors that must be considered. The exterior dimensions must fit within the available space, and weight should be reduced as much as possible. Generally speaking, increasing both the surface area and the size of the duct that acts upon the oil within the damper will allow for a wider range and increased control of the damping force, however this must be done within the available space. By balancing every possible aspect in the development of each component, HKS is able to produce a truly versatile damper that maximizes the range of adjustment to suit the largest possible range of environments.

1．Wiring preparation

Connect the throttle signal harness (blue) and vehicle speed or engine RPM signal harness (green) with vehicle side signal harness.

2．Set the monitor

Shipping display setting for throttle open, vehicle speed or engine RPM are not shown. Please follow the setup instruction below to show in the main display.

Setting page 2 (axis setting) is set to “Do not use”.

Select the item to be displayed in the setting page 2 (axis setting).
This is showing the engine RPM + throttle open on the display.

Push button (3) + (4) simultaneously to go back to MAIN page.
(* The setup will be saved to the EVC when returning to the MAIN page)

Sometimes, the boost instantly goes up like an overshoot passing the warning boost setting because of the boost start up characteristic. The Warning system will work after a sudden time span of pressure occurred which is set in the EVC.

Please check the relay harness or power supply harness. And be careful with the power supply position or ground wire point of the power supply harness.

The EVC boost control could work incorrectly if the vehicle changed a new part. If the boost control fails too much, please reset the EVC and do the initial setting again. If you didn’t change any parts, the pressure leakage by pipe dislocation or slit could be the cause.

There are 3 modes to set 3 types of boost. For example you can set A for normal boost and B for middle boost and C for high boost.

Scramble boost is an automobile system used in a race or competition to have a boost of power for a short time. Scramble boost will have more boost pressure to the normal boost setting. Therefore you need to tune the engine to endure the scramble boost.

You can't set the boost lower than the vehicle's lowest boost setting (boost pressure setting of actuator and wastegate). However if a stock vehicle installed a boost pressure solenoid, sometimes, it can have a lower boost than a vehicle before it install the EVC when the EVC is OFF.

If your car has 12V actuator or wastegate and turbo with boost pressure control, you can use it.

No we don't sell separately.

By changing the offset setting value or MAP function, we can have some difference, but we recommend fixing the pipes too. It's very effective with shorter pipes, especially with φ4 hose. Also, if you take the φ6 chamber pressure from surge tank, it will cause the overshoot. If all the settings are correct and adequate and still have the overshoot, then it's just the vehicle's characteristic.

Please reset the sampling time. If the situation doesn't get better with sampling time resetting, please use better φ4 hose which can have precise surge tank pressure, or maybe you need to use the orifice or make the φ4 hose a little longer which could prevent the hunting.

It could be because of the vehicle specification. The boost would not go to 300KPa because of the change in the heavier wastegate spring or the capacity of the turbine or the engine.

If you make the higher boost setting than the normal, the vehicle's boost cut will happen because of the fail-safe system. In that case, you can use boost cut disabling device, such as FCD to have higher boost setting. But if you don't set the parts such as fueling carefully for your vehicle, it can cause a knocking or detonation and damage the engine.

A lower gear driving and a high gear driving has a different driving mass. Therefore there are different boost value. Please set the boost with EVC at a high gear such as 4th.

Please check the pipes and exhaust bypass switch for controller. If you set the same for normal max boost and normal boost for initial setting, it can't control the boost because it can’t recognize the correct boost characteristic (you can check the initial boost setting value with EasyWriter). If the normal max boost setting value and initial boost setting values are the same, then please reset the EVC.

If there is a specification change for the vehicle, please check the normal boost and reset the boost in each A/B mode.

Is the place of the pressure check is the same for both EVC and the meter? Depending on the devices, if the difference of the EVC and meter is within the 10KPa, it's a common difference.

To prevent the oil from entering the valve unit, you want to use it. And also, if you see more dirt, you should change the filter.

Because of the certain specification of vehicle, turbine or actuator characteristics, the boost sometimes hangs at a high RPM. You can restrain some of the boost hang with EVC, but if the situation doesn't improve, you need to change or strengthen the actuator or other parts.

You see more and more of this in recent years for turbo automobiles. However you can set the MAP function to prevent surging from happening. It could happen because of the certain specification of vehicle, turbine or actuator characteristics and etc. Then you might replace or modify parts to fix it.

The Monitor looks best from the straight angle. The display could be pale because of the angle. Please change the angle of the monitor or position for a best view.

The "Data Lock” could be on. Please turn the data lock off. Follow the instruction in the manual.

Please check the exhaust bypass selection switch is correct with vehicle. Also check the short wires, snapping, miss-wiring, etc.

Please visit your nearest dealer for check and repair.

No, you can't repair the harness. Please purchase the EVC harness in the option parts.

・Please check the wires and cylinder.
・If the RPM signal outputs to multiple tuning parts, the RPM signal voltage weakens and that EVC can't catch signal.

・Please check the wiring location and all-open or all-close throttle setting.
・Please check the earth wire. Do not modify the earth wire and make sure to do the body earth.

・Please set the MAP function. It will display signals in the MAP function with Map axis.

・Please check the scramble time setting. If the scramble time setting is too short, the scramble could be canceled before the boost goes up.
・The vehicle side setting could cause the boost to stop. Please check with A/B setting for target scramble boost.

Solenoid valve has only 2 conditions, "ON” and "OFF”. The interval of the ON and OFF controls the boost. In contrast to solenoid valve, stepping motor can adjust between ON and OFF. This can control boost more precisely.

You can set or change the each values faster and precisely, can do more precise setting with the MAP function and can use the logger function during the boost setting.

It’s about switch in the SLD. SLD has to set the right switch for the your automobiles.

If you set the switch after IG-ON, the setting might not be executed. Please make it IG-OFF and try again.

The stock meter will display as much as it can. For installing a retrofit, please wire with sky blue color wire if there is one, and if not please wire to the white color line.

2. For SLD type III
It will only display from about 170 to 175km/h for SUBARU cars and the retrofit meter type which uses CAN communication signal such as OBD II for vehicle speed display. Also, if you connect the CAC or turbo timer to the speed signal wire of the option coupler or navigation, it will display 180 km/h over (including SUBARU).

Please connect SLD between the position where the navigation is wired and ECU.

1. If the meter is not working; 
Probably the vehicle speed signal wires of input/output (white/yellow) are set wrong, or power supply or ground wire connection might be the cause of the problem.

2. If the meter stops at 170 to 180 km/h;

●Procedure to eject a microSD card when the constant power supply is connected

1. Turn off the power of the main unit of DMR.

2. Unplug the power supply of the main unit.

When "Always List" is overwritten depends on the capacity of a memory card. When the capacity is full, the data are overwritten in chronological order.

Often the gray colored timer wire (parking brake wire) is not properly wired. Please check if the wires are correctly set.

Basically, you need separately sold timer harness for your vehicle and these color wires;

- Gray: Parking brake signal wire

It's the system to lock all the doors when it reaches sudden speed (usually 20km/h). And it will unlock the doors when the automobile stops and hazard switch is on, and when engine is stopped, and also when the select lever is put into "P". Installation is not really difficult since wiring is simply done by connecting wires using couplers. However, it involves removal of a negative cable of a battery which requires the initial settings for the power window, back guide monitor, etc.（See the manual for more details.） Also, modification of the ECU box is required (except for VAC type S). Install VAC type S to inside the ECU box where is located in an engine compartment. Other types must be secured to a foot space part on the passenger's seat side by installing the harness and pull it from the ECU box where is located in an engine compartment

■TROUBLE SHOOTING for CEL 【LANCER EVOLUTION X（CZ4A 5M/T, TC-SST）】

If the oil doesn't flow back to oil pan and cause a leakage, the white smoke from the muffler will come out.

Ｉ．The rise of the pressure in the engine(crank case)
The center housing of the turbo charger is in a negative pressure to prevent from the oil to leak. However the blowby-gas that occurs by the piston ring because of the friction and not proper exhaust of the blowby gas cause the oil leakage from the turbo when it's a high pressure in the crank case.
And also the oil used in the turbo does not flow back smoothly to the oil pan will cause a oil leakage.
Simple Inspection Method
(1) The white smoke will go away if you take off the oil exit, level gauge and blowby hose.
(2) When idling and open the oil-feeding hole and see if the air doesn't go in(you can check with smoke near the hole).

If there is the situation of (1) or (2) it could probably mean the pressure of the crank case of the engine gets too high. If the engine is normal, it will intake to the blowby to the engine by using the negative pressure in the crank case of negative pressure and the pressure in the turbo is also negative pressure, so the oil will not blow out of the turbo. 

Conceivable cause
(1) The friction of the piston ring, cylinder and valve guide.
Can intake the blowby gas because of the galling, combustion gas leakage. The vehicles with long distance of driving must be cautious. 
(2) Blowby gas or PCV valve clog or defection.
The blowby gas doesn't inhaled properly because of the hose or the head cover of the connection part clogged or the defect of the PCV valve that doesn't boost in the crank case.
(3) Blowby hose is wide open or oil catch tank is defect.
You should be careful not to wide open the blowby hose. It could not flow properly in the oil catch tank of the blowby gas because of the length or curve of the hose.

* 1. PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve

PCV valve inhales blowby gasin an idling and also work as a orifice to control the too much inhale of the blowby gas by engine brake or too high negative pressure of surge tank.
Moreover, if the surgr tank get to be the normal pressure by the boost, the crank case pressure lower by flowing by the PCV valve as clack valve and close it to release the gas from main to the crank case.

	Confirm the PCV movement Check the PCV flow the air into the one direction ・Clean with brake cleaner ・Change if it doesn't work after the cleaning
	Make sure the the hole is clear for the blowby hose installation partof air cleaner side The back of the connector of hose is sometimes closed with sludge. ・Confirm the hole with wire ・If it's clogged, open with wire of air blow
	Make sure the PCV connector is clear As you can see in the picture left, sometimes the hole is clogged with sludge  ・Confirm the hole with wire ・If it's clogged, open with wire of air blow

II. Clogging, curving and collapsing of the oil return (drain) 
It will have oil leakage because the oil in the turbo that doesn't return to the oil pan. Also the sludge in the exhaust manifold and wastegate will cause the not a smooth oil flow.

III. Excessive oil supply
Make sure to be φ0.6～1.5m for oil supply line of orifice to control the oil supply. The size of the orifice different from the engine type and turbo type. Set the oil pressure for maximum of under 2.5kgf/cm2 of turbo entrance with the orifice if it's ball bearing type.(minimum of more than 0.7kgf/cm2). The oil volume of the dress hose exit is 800cc/min.  

IV. Excessive Engine oil supply
This will not have smooth oil flow to the oil pan and will have oil leakage, too. For a sudden stop or inclined driving might cause the high oil level and defective in oil return.

V. The oil will be sucked into the intake side because of the clogged air cleaner.
It doesn't cause as the problem because the tuning car usually uses stick out type air cleaner. But if it's blowby gas suction, be careful not to mistake with the oil.

VI. The oil will be sucked out to the exhausting side for the big front pipe & catalyzer-less.
Need to be careful because sometimes the tuning car has a big front pipe and catalyzer-less. Usually, it smells very strong of burning smell of oil with white smoke when the oil leakage occurs in the exhaust part.

VII. The mistake of the oil left over from the past.

Sometimes the oil leakage happen before in the intercooler or muffler could be mistaken for the oil leakage.

Turbo charger structure is sealing the oil by rotating. Therefore when the lower RPM such as idling has higher possibility of oil leakage and also once it started to leak there will be a drain that keep the oil to drift. We don't recommend for a long idling. If there is no problem from I to VII, it could be the engine problem. Please check the engine. And if there is no problem in the engine, please check the turbo charger.

I. Boost pressure loss (turbo charger, intercooler, throttle and intake manifold)
It could be the air leak from the joint hose between the pipes or it open by too much of the stock or other maker's boost pressure. There could be leakage from the surge tank or intake manifold.

II. Blocked or crushed part of the intake system
If the air cleaner is blocked or the rubber hose used for suction in front of the turbo charger could cause to crush for the negative pressure by the boost. And also there could be waste between the turbo charger, intercooler and throttle.

III. Throttle valve
It can't have the boost pressure if the throttle valve is fully open in some reason.

IV. Malfunction of the swing valve or wastegate valve.
Boost pressure will not go up if the swing valve of the boost pressure control or wastegate valve is open too much. The seizure of the valve, defect actuator that is to activate the valve and defect in the air pressure control for the actuator. Also check the movement of stock boost control solenoid valve and the area the hose is. And check if there is an orifice or not. Another case, even the actuator or the wastegate is working fine, if the spring is weak, it will not have the boost up because the valve open for exhaust pressure.

V. Blocked exhaust system
If there is block for the Exhaust manifold, turbo charger, extension, front pipe, catalyzer, and muffler the boost pressure will not go up.

VI. The leakage in the exhaust system
If there is gas leakage for the exhaust manifold or turbo installed flange, the boost pressure will not go up. You will probably notice when this happen because of the leaking air sound.


If you don't find any problem of I to VI, it could be the problem of engine. If you find no problem in the engine, please check the turbo charger.

If there is gas leakage for the exhaust manifold or turbo installed flange, the boost pressure will not go up. You will probably notice when this happen because of the leaking air sound.You will hear the big blow sound when it starts to open if the wastegate exit is deformed or fully open.

V. Strange noise of the pipe

If you don't find any problem in steps I to V, it could be the problem of engine. If you find no problem in the engine, please check the turbo charger.

When taking off the turbo charger, be careful to confirm the list below as carefully checking where the problem is. 

I. Check the unusual bolts, nuts and hose.
II. Check for contaminant (usually caused for turbo charger damage)
III. Check for Heat discoloration
IV. Check for oil or coolant water for leakage or bad contamination

If you notice above matter, don't disassemble and bring the turbo charger to the shop where you purchased it.

The wheel blade will be damaged if the an object go into the intake or exhaust wheel. And if you keep drive in that condition, the shaft will be broken because of the unbalance rotor which cause bearing seizure.

The cause of the object fly into the intake system
・The nut that tighten the impeller that's in the air cleaner or suction pipe will sucked in. 
・Assembled while some object are still there like washer or waste.

If an object is something hard like a nut or a rock, the blade will be wrecked or cut. Or if the object is soft the blade will be deformed to the back. If it's sand or dust, the blade will be wore out.

The cause of the object going into the exhaust side.
・The piece of engine parts(plug, piston, ring, etc.)
・Things that forgot to clean.

The lock could also happen by something get stuck from the engine to turbine blade and housing or shroud. 
If something go into the exhaust side, the engine could be damaged. In this case you need to inspect the engine first.

Sometimes while driving or right after you stop a car, the turbo charger can get damaged by the high heat. If you stop a car after driving, the lubricant and coolant oil also stops. This will cause the oil film breakage of the still running shaft and bearing and also the high heat of the turbine housing will transfer to center housing which cause the sludge.(heat soak back) If this sludge increase, the oil passage will get narrow and cause an even higher heat. Later, the sludge will get granular carbon and damage the bearing, seizure of the bearing and breaking the shaft. It's better to have an idling time after a drive. And if you can't have an idling like at a race, making the cooling system for center housing will prevent this problem.
If the temperature of the exhaust is too high while driving, there could be interfere between turbine housing and turbine wheel because of the deformation. Also it could cause a crack of the turbine housing and carbonized of oil. When setting please check the fuel-air ratio and also the exhaust temp.

Causes of the temperature rise:
・Unusual A/F
・Unusual ignition timing
・Exhaust system clogged
・Unusual engine management system including the stock ECU

It's ok but for the best result of cleaning use only this product.

Best if used every 5000km or 6 months.

It could be different for different automobiles and situation, but our test results show 10% improvemenet.
